Nearly 15 Million Americans have been diagnosed with COPD, with as many as an additional 12 Million cases that remain undiagnosed.
The incidence of both forms of COPD—chronic bronchitis and emphysema—has risen in women even as it has declined in men. Women experience chronic bronchitis at twice the rate of men.
70% of cases of chronic bronchitis and 90% of cases of emphysema occur in adults 45 years or older.
In the United States, COPD occurs at highest rates in the Southeast and Midwest states.

Factors that determine whether a given trial is a “fit” include age, the stage of the disease, location, previous medication usage and more.

There are currently hundreds of clinical studies available for COPD patients in the United States. Studies are available for people affected by chronic bronchitis, as well as emphysema.
Patients involved in clinical studies generally do somewhat better than people who are not enrolled, regardless of whether the experimental treatment works.
Most clinical trials provide study medications and trial-related medical care at no cost. Many reimburse travel costs and provide compensation to participants.
